What real purpose do civil engineers serve?

The reason I ask is multi-fold. Architects actually design buildings/structures and make sure that everything is in the right place/correct materials/ etc., no?

Contractors actually go out to the site and make sure said building/structure gets built.

So what does a C.E. do besides uh….erm… I got nothin’.

I’m trying to convince a C.E. major to convert from the dark side (enginerding) to become a real, useful scientist. Your thoughts/opinions on swaying them would be most helpful.

Civil engineers suck balls and irritate architects. That’s all.

Architects in turn suck balls and cause lots of change orders to fuck up contractors. The most important person in construction is without doubt a real estate analyst like that Rev Chad asshole who carefully observes the real estate market on behalf of the developer and investors and have to suck the engineer and architects balls to pull cost information for a financial feasibility study. Son.

An architect designs the building within the available budget, oversees the bidding process, and assures that what is built is per the contract documents. The architect is also the project traffic cop, coordinating various disciplines and trades. One of which is Civil Engineering.

I use CE’s for site layout and design. Parking lots, drainage, run-off detention. But mostly they do roads, bridges dams and shit.
.
Then there is the seedy parasitic class, who commands the same 6% fee as the architect for spending thousands of hours and taking on scads of legal exposure. For the same money, these guys walk up, take a look, and say “yeah, that’s worth $Xmillion”, then they list it. They then take their money and hand it to Lenny the Box.
.
In short – Tell your CE major to do what RevChad does. I wish someone had given me the straight dope in college. Or even the stuff that was cut with baking powder.
